INDIANAPOLIS – Sixteen years following the terror attacks in New York, several Hoosiers may wonder if added security measures have improved safety. Officials in Indianapolis believe so.
With security at the Indianapolis International Airport and the city’s police force more than doubling, those in Indianapolis said safety is a priority.
Indianapolis Airport Police Chief Bill Reardon said the addition of canine officers has provided tremendous support.
"They can pick up scents of what is traveling through the air. As we move forward in this battle against evil basically. we try to be proactive versus reactive,” said Reardon.
He said many of the proactive measures include checking passengers before they board airplanes.
Peter Beering, an expert on counter terrorism, said attacks in Europe have added fear for some people.
"In Europe, in recent months, we learned about vehicles being used as weapons,” said Berring. “What's next? That is the real question that security officials have to wrestle with is what innocuous thing that we take for granted can be exploited by the bad guys to do harm that is a tough job.”
Paula Wheeldon said she gets teary-eyed when she looks at the display of a piece of the Twin Towers in the Indianapolis airport, but she said life must go on.
"It's scary if you let it be scary, but we all have lives to live. You can't let fear stop you from doing things you want to do,” she said.
