INDIANAPOLIS — Police have confirmed a person is dead after a shooting in a neighborhood on Indianapolis' southeast side.

According to information from the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department, it happened around 6 p.m. Thursday at a house in the 6400 block of Winslow Drive.

Police said people who live at the house filed a police report on Thursday after the house was burglarized late Wednesday or early Thursday. On Thursday evening, three men reportedly drove up in a car and appeared to be trying to break in, police said.

IMPD said a person who was in the home opened fire on the three people, striking and killing one of them. Police said the person who fired the shots is a friend or relative of the people who live at the house and was asked to come over to the house to provide protection after the burglary.

Police said one of the other suspects fled in a vehicle, the other fled on foot.

Detectives arrested Benjamine Gardner, 47, and Kevin Lemaster, 40, on January 11. Both men are charged with felony murder and burglary.

The exact details surrounding the shooting and investigation have not been released.

The investigation remains ongoing.
