Speedway schools spend $90K to improve lighting, efficiency

Posted

SPEEDWAY, Ind. -- Things are looking a little brighter inside the Speedway Schools district.

The west side school system of 1,700 students is replacing exterior building lights and parking lot lights with LED fixtures.

“The light is significantly brighter and the engineers promise a high level of energy savings,” said Superintendent Kenneth Hull.

Hull said the goal is to improve safety and security cost over the coming decade.

LEDs use less energy and cost less money to operate, plus, LEDs have a longer lifespan than standard bulbs.

Hull said the expected to cost just under $90,000.

“The original lowest quote was $93k, but then we found some ways to reduce the number of lights,” said Hull. “ Given that the old lights were very costly to operate, repair, and replace our estimate is that we will recoup the expense over the coming decade.  In addition, we expect to receive an immediate $13,000 rebate from IPL because IPL supports efficiency projects which reduce consumption.”

Hull expects the new bulbs to also reduce operating costs for the district.
