INDIANAPOLIS -- Indiana Superintendent of Public Instruction, Dr. Jennifer McCormick, on Thursday sent a letter to members of Indiana General Assembly and the Indiana Congressional Delegation to urge them to address school safety in Indiana in the wake of the deadly school shooting in Parkland, Florida.
Dr. McCormick says the Indiana Department of Education supports local schools in their development of safety plans. Each school district is required to have a school safety specialist per Indiana code. Also according to the code, school districts are required to participate in emergency preparedness drills for fires, tornadoes and man-made emergencies.
In her letter, Dr. McCormick asks Indiana lawmakers to undertake new school safety efforts:
"These efforts must include passing policies which decrease risks, providing support for social and emotional programs to address mental and behavioral health, and approving budgets that increase resources."

Dr. McCormick also asks state lawmakers to take action to require charter and non-public schools to comply with the same safety requirements that school corporations must follow.
