INDIANAPOLIS -- A local retreat house hoping someone will have a change of heart and return several plaques stolen from their property that had been recently built and put up by a local Boy Scout.
Georgene Beiriger, director of the Fatima Retreat House, has been making upgrades to the building off of East 56th Street, which includes replacing the stations of the cross.
“It’s a common devotion people do when they stay on retreat. They like to pray the stations of the cross. It went throughout the trails on our 13 acres – it was a beautiful setting – a natural setting,” Beiriger said.
Andrew Nelson, 16, had been building those stations as his Eagle Scout project, with help from his father, Eric. The pair has spent the last several months taking down the old crosses and replacing them with new ones.
But sometime over the weekend – a thief stole the plaques off of nine of the 14 crosses.
“Some they split the boards, some they took off the boards,” Beiriger said.
The figures on the plaques had been ordered from Belgium and cost nearly $2,600.
“I’m sick over this,” Nelson said. “I know how much effort he put into it. It was a really great learning experience for him.”
Beiriger says they now plan to put up surveillance cameras around the retreat house and hopefully they can raise enough money to replace to 9 plaques that are missing.
“We pray for the person who did it. We don’t know the motivation or anything. We certainly hope that person has a change of heart and brings them back – no questions asked,” Beiriger said.
