INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Students in Wayne Township will not only learn where fresh food comes from, but they’ll get hands-on experience in what it takes to grow their own in their new learning gardens.
Chapelwood Elementary, Stout Field Elementary and Ben Davis High School were the latest schools awarded learning gardens - permanent, raised gardens placed in school yards made for growing fruits and vegetables.
More than 22 learning gardens were installed in Indianapolis area schools since November 2016, and Wayne Township officials are set to build eight more this year by expanding to Indianapolis Public Schools Beech Grove and Warren Township.
“We are very thankful they chose us. We now get to have a brand-new learning space for our kids,” said Chapelwood teacher Alison Osborn.
Each school with a planter is equipped with a garden team who manages the area.
