INDIANAPOLIS — Wayne Township Trustee Andy Harris is recovering after undergoing surgery for Metastatic Squamous Carcinoma.

“The doctors removed Andy's tonsils and a large amount of lymph nodes in his neck including the ones where the cancer had spread,” read a township newsletter. “They were able to remove all of the cancer with great success. While in the hospital he continued to amaze the doctors and the nurses with his can-do spirit.”

Harris, in office since 2011, discovered a lump below his ear and along his cheek line and went to the doctor to get it checked out.

“Watching from the sidelines is the worst. Not being able to take away the pain, the discomfort, the weariness...it is all the worst,” said his wife, Kim Harris.  "These doctors are amazing and I will forever be grateful for them.  We cannot thank you all enough for the prayers!”

Trustee Harris went home from the hospital on May 15.

“He is still a bit restless but on the right path to recovery,” read the newsletter. “Please continue to pray for peace and healing.”

Trustee Harris is asking family and friends to support #TEAMHARRIS in the upcoming Relay for Life in Speedway on June 9.

According to the National Cancer Institute, Metastatic Squamous Carcinoma is a treatable type of skin cancer.

“Not happy about this, but at least it is curable and I will get through it because God carry’s me because I am his, but I am sure I will whine like a baby,” said Harris in a Facebook post. “I ask you my brothers and sisters to continue to pray it gets better than expected, and that the surgery won't be so evasive as thought.”

Harris said he expects to have radiation as well, and will be at home recovering for up to six weeks.

"You all know my community means the world to me, and I don’t want you to think I am missing a meeting on purpose," read the Facebook post.
