HAMILTON COUNTY, Ind. -- INDOT is fining a sub-contractor $6,000 for causing the traffic mess Tuesday morning on I-69.
Construction crews worked beyond a 6 a.m. deadline Tuesday, as they restriped traffic lanes in the construction zone between 106th and 116th streets.
The work delay caused a 10-mile traffic backup in the southbound lanes of I-69 in Hamilton County during the morning rush hour.
INDOT says the subcontractor underestimated the time it would need to complete work Tuesday morning, and that once the work began, it had to be completed.
An INDOT spokesperson told RTV6 the contract with the company includes a penalty of $3,000 per hour that work goes beyond 6 a.m.
The work is part of a $21.7 million dollar project to build a new roundabout at 106th Street that will carry traffic above I-69.
