INDIANAPOLIS — The Indiana Department of Transportation announced Wednesday it will begin installing systems next week across the state to help reduce crashes at intersections.

According to a release from INDOT, intersection conflict warning systems that feature signs and flashing lights will be placed before 17 intersections around the state that have a stop sign and no traffic signal.

The Federal Highway Administration reported the systems help reduce severe crashes by up to 20-30%.

INDOT will install lights and signage to alert drivers on both intersecting roads that traffic is approaching or there is a waiting vehicle.

Intersection conflict warning systems use vehicle detection under the pavement to trigger the system, which features signs and flashing yellow warning lights, according to INDOT.
