INDIANAPOLIS -- Firefighters in Indianapolis had a busy start to their holiday weekend with nine large fires in just 24 hours that displaced more than two dozen people.
The back to back calls began Saturday morning and are beginning to take their toll on fire crews, said Indianapolis Fire Department Battalion Chief Rita Reith.
The department has had several firefighters treated for heat-related injuries in response to the fires, luckily none of them have been seriously injured.

Reith said crews have been shedding their heavy equipment as often as they can and rotating out to avoid injuries. The Indianapolis Fire Buff Rehab has also been on the scene at some of those fires providing water, Gatorade, snacks and even wet towels to keep firefighters cool.

“It’s been a busy July Fourth,” said Reith. “We want everyone to stay safe. Use common sense when doing fireworks. We have already had a firefighter injury in Decatur Township, it’s proving to be a busy weekend.”
