INDIANAPOLIS – Firefighters from all over the city gathered, to honor a former chief, and not just any former chief.
Chief Joseph Kimbrew died last July. He was the first black fire chief in Indianapolis, named to lead Station 1 in 1987 – he had been a firefighter for 32 years already.
On Saturday, Station 1 was named in honor of Chief Kimbrew in a ceremony held by the Indianapolis Black Firefighters Association and attended by Mayor Joe Hogsett. Station 1 was historically the only station in which African-American firefighters were assigned during the time when segregation was still prevalent.
