INDIANAPOLIS — The Indianapolis Public Library is on a new mission to give every kid in the county a library card.

On Monday, library workers held a distribution ceremony at New Augusta Public Academy South elementary school where 6,886 new library cards were given out to Pike Township students who didn't already have one.

The cards give students online access to a range of electronic resources, including eBooks, eAudiobooks, streaming music and video and more than 80 research databases. It also allows limited borrowing of books and other physical materials. Young kids can upgrade to a full Libarary card by visiting any IndyPL location with a parent or guardian.

“The partnership between MSD Pike Township and The Indianapolis Public Library is a wonderful opportunity for our students to have a library card,” stated MSD of Pike Township Superintendent Dr. Flora J. Reichanadter. “A library card provides a gateway to learning that will give our students access to a nearly unlimited array of online and physical resources. Having this range of materials at their fingertips can only help ensure their academic success and a lifetime of learning.”

In Pike Township, 10,341 elementary and secondary students now have free access to the library's online and physical resources.

The Indianapolis Public Library has distributed nearly 50,000 cards to students across Marion County so far.
