Indy Zoo welcomes Orangutan mom, baby

Posted

INDIANAPOLIS -- The Indianapolis Zoo has added two new members to their Orangutan family.

One-year-old Max and his 38-year-old mother, Kim came to Indianapolis from the Jackson Zoo in Mississippi.

Zoo officials say Max started showing signs of slow development in Jackson and his mother was overweight and losing some of her mobility, so workers decided to move the pair to Indianapolis for extra care.

Indianapolis Zoo was chosen for its state-of-the-art orangutan center and expert ape caretakers.

Since arriving at the zoo, caretakers say Kim has lost weight and increased her mobility. Vet staff say Max is also responding well to his treatment and is eating better.

You likely won’t see the pair right away. They’ll  be introduced to some of the zoo’s other orangutans before being moved to the Simon Skjodt International Orangutan Center.
