INDIANAPOLIS — Here is another reminder to be careful to not get caught in a scam.

Indianapolis Power & Light said in a release it has received an increase in reports about payment scams. Customers report they have been contacted by someone claiming to represent IPL and saying electric service would be disconnected.

IPL said one of the most common utility scams involve customers receiving telephone, electronic or in-person communications from someone claiming to represent the utility who demands immediate payment or service will be disconnected.

IPL said it does not require or recommend a specific payment method or type and people should call IPL at 317-261-8222 to verify if someone from the utility contacted them about their bill. An IPL representative calling about a bill will have specific information regarding a customer's account.

Anyone who thinks they are a victim of a scam should call their local police department non-emergency number.
