INDIANAPOLIS – Indianapolis Public Schools just set a new participation record for their athletic programs thanks to a recent program expansion at the K-8 level.

Over 1,200 students are set to take part in the athletic department’s elementary and middle school soccer season.

Previously, IPS offered athletics to students in the fourth grade and above. This season, students in kindergarten and above will be allowed to play soccer for their school.

The soccer season is set to begin Aug. 31. All matches will begin at 5:30 p.m. at either Jonathan Jennings School 109 (Gateway West Park) for students on the city’s west side, or at George Fisher School 93 for those on the east side.

IPS Athletics will work with Indy Youth Sports and Indiana Soccer to help prepare and coordinate the 2016 K-8 Fall leagues.

The athletic program expansion will also offer more sports at lower grade levels to engage younger students.
