INDIANAPOLIS -- Indianapolis Public Schools will pay nearly a half million dollars to settle a lawsuit over a former vice principal who sexually assaulted a student.

Former George Washington Community High School vice principal and athletic director Corey Greenwood, 41, was sentenced to 30 days in jail in 2013 for having sex with a 16-year-old female student.

That student filed a lawsuit in 2015, saying its possible she could have been spared her trauma if IPS had taken action in 2004 – when another female student complained about sexual misconduct from Greenwood.

Documents show Greenwood failed a polygraph test, but was never punished. Instead, he was transferred to Washington High School, and given a promotion three times.

On Thursday, IPS announced it had agreed to pay Greenwood's victim $490,000. Greenwood will also pay his victim $10,000.

"Though the current IPS administration was not in place during the time of these events, it has demonstrated with high priority complete collaboration with representatives of the court, legal counsel and parties involved to bring the matter to close with sensitivity and expediency," the district said in a statement Thursday.

Greenwood served 15 days of his sentence in 2013 before being released. He no longer works within IPS.
