INDIANAPOLIS -- Indianapolis Public Schools students will notice something a little different in the lunch room this year.
At students' requests, the district has replaced almost all of its lunch trays with a new, biodegradable variety.
Previously, as many as 4.7 million Styrofoam trays were thrown away in IPS lunch rooms each year.
Now, those trays will be more environmentally friendly paperboard.
The one downside is that the trays cost about 2 cents more each. That comes out to nearly $100,000 more per year district-wide.
It's money the district says is well-spent to help the environment and encourage kids to continue advocating for what they think is right.
