TIPTON COUNTY — Indiana State Police evacuated homes Friday morning after two semis collided and caused a chemical leak in Tipton County.

The accident happened around 5:30 a.m. near the railroad tracks on US 31 near CR 100S.

Indiana State Police say a tanker carrying hydrochloric acid had stopped at the railroad tracks, as required by law, and was rear-ended by another semi. HAZMAT was called to the scene after the accident caused a large cloud of white smoke.

State police also evacuated homes in the immediate area as a precaution, although they say no one was in immediate danger.

Both drivers received minor injuries.

State police closed US 31 closed at the SR 28 intersection for several hours to clean up the crash.

The crash remains under investigation.

Northbound traffic is being directed onto SR 28. Southbound traffic is moving but has been reduced to one lane and Indiana State Police say drivers should seek an alternate route if possible.
