INDIANAPOLIS — It may seem like there's a lot going on out on Indiana roadways, but Indiana State Police say fatal and injury crash numbers are down significantly this year compared to years past.

Indiana State Police Sergeant John Perrine shared statistics on Friday showing that 310 people have died on Indiana roadways between January 1 and June 21, 2019. Of course that's too many, but it's also 73 less than the same period last year and 118 fewer than in 2017 — which was the deadliest year on Indiana roadways in the past five.

Indiana Fatal Crash Numbers (between Jan. 1 & June 21) 2015 to 2019

  • 2015: 366 fatalities
  • 2016: 365 fatalities
  • 2017: 428 fatalities
  • 2018: 383 fatalities
  • 2019: 310 fatalities

The same can be said for injury crashes in general. Perrine also shared statistics showing crashes resulting in injuries of any form were down drastically from the previous four years. In 2019, 18,645 people were injured in crashes on Indiana roads that's roughly 1,800 less than in 2018.
