INDIANAPOLIS -- Indiana is looking at what jobs will be in greatest demand in the next six years, and healthcare, particularly nurses, ranks right at the top of the list.

According to Department of Workforce Development's "Hoosier Hot 50," the top five jobs poised for the most demand over the next several years are registered nurse, K-12 teacher, truck driver, wholesale/manufacturing sales rep and general manager.

Kevin Taylor is one of many Hoosiers looking for a career change after his job of 14 years was eliminated. He enrolled at Ivy Tech Franklin hoping a computer degree will insulate him from another layoff in the future.

"I'm excited about it," Taylor said. "Every day is a new day."

Ivy Tech, now under the leadership of former Lt. Gov. Sue Ellspermann, is focused statewide on offering classes that will help students graduate on time and lead to an open job.

Ivy Tech predicts an additional 2,700 registered nursing jobs will become available annually through 2020. Industrial technology, which covers welders and cutters, could be looking at 2,200 jobs annually.
