JOHNSON COUNTY, Ind. -- A Johnson County teen received serious injuries after a fireworks mishap Saturday evening.
The 15-year-old was attending a party and fireworks show at a home on S 435 West in Franklin when the incident happened.
Witnesses said an adult lit a mortar and it shot straight up into the air and came down at the teen and landed between her thighs before exploding.
The girl received major trauma to her left thigh and burns and shrapnel to her right thigh from the incident and was taken to Riley Hospital for treatment.
The homeowners told deputies with the Johnson County Sheriff’s Department that they have been hosting the fireworks show for ten years and had never had any incidents before.
Officers on the scene confirmed that all safety measures had been taken and that the mishap with the firework was “just a tragic accident.”
The teen’s condition is not known at this time.
