FRANKLIN, Ind. -- The next phase of a major construction project along Jefferson Street through the heart of downtown Franklin will begin soon.
The contractor is nearing the completion of Phase 3 which includes Jefferson between Main Street and Home Avenue. Weather permitting, this section will open to drivers on Friday, September 15.
There still be some work to complete on the sidewalks in that area after the road opens to traffic. Parking will be closed while the construction team completes the sidewalk project. They do anticipate the sidewalks and parking will be open by the end of September.
Phase 4 of the project will close to traffic, weather permitting, on Monday, September 19. It includes Jefferson Street between Home Avenue and the railroad crossing just east of Crowell Street. This section is just west of the entrance to Franklin College. Phase 4 will remain closed to traffic between next week and mid-November. The local Phase 4 detour includes streets like Home Avenue, Monroe Street and Branigin Blvd.
Local business owners in downtown Franklin say, despite the construction, their foot traffic hasn’t slowed down.
Many shops are having customers use back entrances to access their businesses. They are also getting the word out through social media help keep their businesses afloat.
The city asks Franklin residents and visitors to continue to support local businesses along this downtown stretch throughout the duration of the project -- their doors remain open.
