Grant to help improve firefighter safety in Greenwood

Posted

GREENWOOD, Ind. -- Firefighters in Greenwood can now battle flames while staying a whole lot safer thanks to a special grant.

The Firehouse Subs Public Safety Foundation Board of Directors approved a $12,000 grant which will be used to purchase of new particle filtering firefighting hoods.

Particle filtering firefighter hoods block many of the cancer causing carcinogens and particulates that are present while fighting a fire.

The hoods have new state-of-the-art particle filtering fabric and technology strategically placed to protect high exposure areas of the head and neck. Recent studies show that the hoods block 96.6% of the particles.

The Greenwood Fire Department hopes to have the hoods issued to members around the first of 2018.

"We would like to thank the Firehouse Subs Public Safety Foundation for their support," says the department on their Facebook post about the announcement.

Firehouse Subs founders have a mission of providing funding, life-saving equipment, and educational opportunities to first-responders and public safety organizations.

So far, they've granted more than $29.5 million to hometown heroes in 46 states, Puerto Rico and Canada, including more than $657,000 in Indiana.
