INDIANAPOLIS – For many of us, school days were spent sitting at a desk. But today, that's not always the case in every single classroom, and one local school is finding out it's all for the best.
At Stout Field Elementary in Wayne Township, students no longer have to take a seat when the bell rings.
If they’re sleepy or fidgety, they use standing desks.
“It’s amazing,” second-grade teacher Jessica Kennedy said. “The kids love it – they absolutely love it.”
This past year, Kennedy says thanks to a number of donations, 13 standing desks were added to the school’s classrooms.
“As a whole, the class just runs a lot smoother,” Kennedy said. “When those kids – who don’t sit in their seat as well – when they’re comfortable, on task and doing what they’re supposed to, the whole classroom runs more smoothly.”
It’s why other schools across the area are shifting to standing desks.
Ben Davis High School and Indianapolis Public School 19 both have them.
But that said, the standing desks are not the only tactic the school is using to keep kids comfortably learning.
When standing desks aren’t available, regular desks are being given a lift: One fifth-grade classroom bounces on balls; and kindergartners have access to a “kneeling table,” made by their teacher specifically for them.
Kennedy says it’s about keeping kids out of their seats, keeping them moving, and above all, giving them a choice.
