INDIANAPOLIS—A key Indianapolis street that funnels traffic from the south and I 70 into downtown Indianapolis will be closed for about seven months.

Citizens Energy is shutting down Illinois Street between McCarty and South Street, staring Dec. 2. That's close to Lucas Oil Stadium and the main post office. The closure is expected to last until July, 2020.

It's not a long stretch of road, but it carries thousands of vehicles going north each day.

Workers will be completing construction on the Lower Pogue's Run Tunnel, which is part of the DigIndy tunnel system. The 28-mile network of underground tunnels will be complete by 2025, with a goal of eliminating most sewer overflows in Marion County, according to Citizens Energy.

While Illinois Street will be closed to through traffic, local access will remain open.
