INDIANAPOLIS – We're working to make sure you have your head on a swivel, because thieves are reminding us: They're not just on a holiday schedule. They're scanning parking lots on the north side and stealing valuables all year long.

Over the weekend at two malls including Castleton Square and Keystone at the Crossing, there were 7 reports of car break-ins.

One woman we spoke with – a Brownsburg mother of three whose identity we are protecting – says she was eating dinner at the Cheesecake Factory and came out to find her car window had been smashed in during broad daylight.

Her car wasn’t in the back of the parking lot. It has tinted windows. People were everywhere. You’d think that would keep a thief from breaking in, but apparently not.

Her laptop was stolen along with her purchases from the mall.

She said she wanted to share her story with the public to spread the word: It doesn’t have to be dark and you don’t have to be in a secluded area for your car to be broken into.

“There’s no way anyone can tell me that all the people who walked past my car yesterday – that they didn’t think to themselves, ‘Hmm, something’s wrong,’” she said. “When you see something, say something. Yes it is your business – because it could be your tomorrow in a couple of hours.”

We reached out to Simon Property Group, the owner of the Fashion Mall and Castleton Square Mall. We wanted to find out if any security changes will take place, but the group replied back via email that it has no comment at this time.
