Kokomo loses two Marsh stores; city looking for new grocery options

Posted

KOKOMO, Ind. – Despite the purchase of several Marsh stores by two Ohio companies earlier this week, multiple locations will close their doors for good – including two grocers in Kokomo.

Linda Glassburn, 55, said she had been shopping at her local Marsh on North Washington Street since she was 6 years old.

"It's going to be sad for a lot of people. They got to go to other stores,” said Glassburn. “I think this store is a real good store. The people are nice and they treat you nice. Some other stores don't treat you right."

Another shopper, Kisha Scott said she lives in a home behind the store and has taken advantage of the liquidation sales since the closing announcement was made.

“I was getting coupons for free stuff, free lettuce, free milk. The store was a deal, period,” said Scott.

Many shoppers said they wish another company would’ve purchased the remaining locations. Kokomo Mayor Greg Goodnight said the space may be filled by out-of-town grocery chains.

"They've been looking around Kokomo the last couple of years anyway to bring a new type of fresh grocery store....so this might give them an incentive to go ahead and locate here,” he said.

In mid-May, Marsh filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy and officials said the remaining 44 stores would close if a buyer was not found. On June 13 Topvalco, a subsidiary of Kroger, and Generative Growth II agreed to buy 26 Marsh stores.
