LAFAYETTE — Tippecanoe County health officials recommend Hepatitis A vaccinations for recent diners at Arni's Market Square after an employee who handles food was diagnosed with the virus.
The employee worked while ill on Sept. 13 and 14 prior to being diagnosed, according to information from the Tippecanoe County Health Department.
The health department said it is rare for restaurant patrons to become infected with Hepatitis A due to an infected food handler, but anyone who ate or drank at the restaurant located at 2200 Elmwood Ave. in Lafayette should receive the vaccination within 14 days of exposure.
Arni's Market Square remains open, and the health department said the building has been disinfected.
The Tippecanoe County Health Department will host a free Hepatitis A vaccination clinic from 8 a.m. to noon and 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 23 and Tuesday Sept. 24.
People who cannot attend the vaccination clinic should contact their medical provider or the Tippecanoe County Health Department for an appointment before Friday, Sept. 27.
The health department also said anyone who ate or drank at Arni's Market Square on Sept. 13 or 14 should:
· Monitor their health for symptoms of hepatitis A infection up to 50 days after exposure.
· Wash their hands with soap and warm water frequently and thoroughly, especially after using the bathroom and before preparing food.
· Stay at home and contact their healthcare provider immediately if symptoms of hepatitis A infection develop.
