Lafayette kayak business loses money due to high water

LAFAYETTE, Ind. – A Lafayette kayak rental service decided to stop renting equipment due to the safety concerns associated with high water.

Owners of Wildcat Canoe and Kayak said they want to keep people safe when out on the water but unfortunately, some are ignoring warnings of high water.

"It's been real tough,” said Rob Weston. “We've been closed more weekends this year than we've been open. We were closed Memorial Day, Father’s Day, Fourth of July. Every holiday it seems we've been closed. It rains every four or five days."

More than 18 people were rescued from the water in the past 19 days due to high water.

“They became entrapped in that fallen tree and didn't have life preservers,” said Sgt. Mat Couch. “They were getting swept underneath the debris. Luckily, officers were able to arrive fairly quickly and execute the rescue."

Weston did not say how much his business has lost due to high water, but he said it is in the $1,000 range.
