INDIANAPOLIS — Hoosiers can help the hungry this Saturday without having to leave home.
The National Association of Letter Carriers is holding its annual "Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive" across the United States.
The Postal Service is partnering with Indianapolis Public Schools to draw attention to the hunger problem here.
A kickoff event took place Thursday at Brookside School on the city's east side.
The Postal Service says Stamp Out Hunger is the nation's largest single-day food drive and produced more than 71 million pounds of food last year alone.
And there is a need.
In Marion County alone, there are more than 42,000 "food insecure children," according to the Postal Service.
Donations of non-perishable food should be bagged and placed by home mailboxes before carriers make their rounds this Saturday.
Foods that are high in protein such as canned tuna, salmon, beans and peanut butter are most needed.
So is canned fruit and vegetables, cereal that is whole grain and low sugar, macaroni and cheese dinners, and 100% fruit juice.
Donations go to local food banks.
