MADISON COUNTY, Ind. -- A 9-year-old girl was credited with saving her mother’s life after their vehicle flipped six times and crashed into a field.
The SUV carrying Melina Lakey, her father and mother Ashley slid off the road near 1100 South and 50 west, clipped a drainage ditch and tumbled into a field.
Ashley was left inverted and smothered by airbags.
"She was in a really, really hurt condition and she was upside down in her seat belt,” said Lakey. “My dad got her unbuckled and I pulled down the airbags so she could get out. I told her which way to go."
Soon after locating her mother’s phone in the car, Lakey also called 911.
"She lifted the airbag and said mommy here I am, come to me,” said Ashley. “With us being upside-down, I crawled on the roof of the car and got to her. Once I had her in my arms I literally collapsed into the yard and every bit of pain hit me, but I had her and we were both OK."
Lakey’s Girl Scout troop had recently undergone training with the Alexandria Fire Department.
"There was blood all over my phone, but she never lost her cool. Even I was taken aback by the blood on the phone,” said Ashley.
For her heroic act, Lakey will receive the Girl Scouts Medal Of Honor.
"I'm really proud. I stayed strong and brave,” said Lakey.
