ANDERSON, Ind. – The Anderson Police Department is hoping to bring more minorities into the force, which is why they’ve increase their recruiting efforts.

During the department’s last hiring cycle, one woman was hired but no African-Americans or Hispanics, and now the administration is looking to change the statistics.

Three recruiting sessions will be held before the end of 2017, with the next taking place Nov. 14.

Scott Sloss, 22, who is finishing up his associates degree in criminal justice, said he may be attending one of the next few sessions. He said African-American officers could relate to and respect people in inner cities.

"I'll be understanding,” said Sloss. “I would know that every minority is not out there doing bad stuff.  Kids are out there struggling."

Miranda Fair, 26, said she also wanted to join the force. The college student and mother of two children said she believes she can add diversity and dedication to the department.

"I care about my community so much,” said Fair. “I want to do something positive. I want to make sure that I am able to help someone who needs to be helped when they call."

Applications for police officers will be accepted through Dec. 31.
