ANDERSON, Ind. -- A man was arrested on multiple charges after he allegedly put an 8-year-old in a chokehold and placed a screwdriver on his throat.
William Rothel, 28, of Anderson, has been preliminarily charged with kidnapping, criminal confinement, criminal recklessness, battery and strangulation.
According to Anderson Police, dispatch received a call around 1:50 p.m. Saturday to the Payless Grocery Store.
When the officer got out of his car, he was told a man tried to take a child at the entrance of the store. Rothel was immediately placed in handcuffs.
The boy's mom told police they were in the grocery store when a man, who was unknown to her, allegedly grabbed her son from behind, put him in a chokehold, and placed a screwdriver on his throat. The mom tried to grab her son, but Rothel was holding him and was trying to get away.
The boy's mom started yelling for help. Another man grabbed Rothel and was able to get the boy free.
Rothel was arrested after leaving the store.
The responding officer noticed a mark on the boy's neck where the screwdriver was pressed against.
