INDIANAPOLIS -- A man who was charged with trying to kill an IMPD officer has been arrested.

Michael Swafford, 31, is accused of shooting at Officer Christopher Maher on March 8 after a traffic stop and chase on Indy's southeast side.

Detectives with the IMPD violent Crimes and Gang Unit and Southwest District arrested Swafford Saturday night.

Detectives tracked him to a gas station in the 3500 block of Kentucky Avenue. As he was leaving the gas station, officers ordered him to surrender and he was taken into custody without incident.

Police say a .50 caliber handgun and drugs were found during a search of Swafford.

In addition to an outstanding warrant for attempted murder, Swafford was also charged with carrying a handgun without a license with a prior conviction, possession of a controlled substance, and possession of marijuana.

Police say Maher, a 14-year veteran, had glass shards in his left hand, but was not shot during the incident on March 8.

Maher is the second IMPD officer who has been shot at this year.

Officer Mark Reynolds was shot in the armwhile responding to a call in the 1100 block of McDougal Street.
