LOGANSPORT — A man has died after witnesses say he jumped off a cliff and into the water at a former quarry in a Cass County park on Wednesday.

The Department of Natural Resources said kayakers heard the man yell to them from a rock ledge at France Park around 1:50 p.m. before he jumped into the water below. Investigators determined the water was about 63 feet below the cliff where the man jumped.

The kayakers told officers they tried to throw him a floatation device, but he became responsive while in the water so they held him at the surface until rescue crews arrived.

The man was taken to a nearby beach where he was pronounced dead. The suspected cause of death is drowning, but an official cause of death will be released after an autopsy is performed by the Cass County Coroner.

The man's identity has not been released.
