Local activist raises awareness about violence

Posted

INDIANAPOLIS -- A man rode around Monument Circle Saturday to send a message about the need to end violence in Indianapolis.

Local activist, Richard Propes, went around Monument Circle 122 times in his wheelchair.

He started his ride in an effort to raise awareness of violence and the lives it claims.

Propes says each lap represents a child who died as a result of senseless crime during the eight-year administration of former mayor Greg Ballard.

"I am going to be thinking about the kids and their faces and what they went through and on a cold day like this, reminding myself that, you know crime doesn't stop in this kind of weather, so we can't stop trying to prevent it in this kind of weather," he said.

Propes says the event is not intended to negatively reflect upon the former mayor's tenure, but instead to remind Mayor Hogsett that there is work to be done.

He also raised money along the way for the Legacy House, which offers counseling and support services for those affected by violence.
