INDIANAPOLIS — Nearly 35,000 runners are getting ready to go for the Indy Mini Marathon including one Texas man with an inspiring weight loss story.

Marcus Cook traveled more than 1,000 miles just to be in Indianapolis so he could run the Indy Mini Marathon.

"I've come all the way from Houston just to run across the finish line to show someone that they can change," said Cook.

"About 3 1/2 years ago I weighed about 500 pounds and promised from a friend who was dying from cancer. He said, I'm dying from cancer, you're dying from your choice and you have to promise me that you're going to change."

Cook is taking that promise and literally running with it. He's competed in races across the country and lost 262 pounds so far.

"It's small incremental changes that happen every day that lead to giant rewards," Cook said.

He also wants to encourage and inspire others by letting them know that if he can do it - so can they.

“They may not be 500 pounds, but you may have 500 pounds of problems and they way you change those problems are, is you start something new every day, and those problems start disappearing and the possibilities start increasing," Cook said.
