INDIANAPOLIS -- The driver in a fatal March 2015 hit-and-run was sentenced Thursday to one year in prison.
Corey Patrick, 33, learned his fate this week for the crash that killed 41-year-old Tanya Turman last year.
Turman, who was deaf and losing her eyesight, was struck by Patrick in March 2015. She died of her injuries 23 days later.
Patrick fled the scene, but eventually turned himself in the next month.
While Turman's mother says she "can't walk around with hate," she doesn't think the punishment fits the crime.
"I think there should be stiffer penalties for people who leave the scene of an accident," Pamela Grant said. "You're not getting that person any kind of medical attention, when they could have possibly made it. I'm pushing to get that law changed."
Patrick elected not to make any comments at his sentencing hearing. But Turman's sister is hoping her message will get through to him and others that hitting and running is unacceptable.
"We're praying that it does," Latisha Crooms said. "That's the goal. Put the word out there so people can see. It hurts people. It hurts people's lives. It's not just them they should be thinking about. It’s the other people who are left behind."
