INDIANAPOLIS -- The man who drove a critically injured woman who'd been shot to the City County Building looking for help last February was sentenced Monday for her murder.
William Smith was sentenced to 62 years in prison on charges of murder, carrying a handgun without a license and possession of marijuana for the death of 20-year-old Azya Knowles.

Smith was arrested last year after driving Knowles to the CCB in downtown Indianapolis looking for help. Responders discovered Knowles had been shot three times in the hea. She later died at the hospital.
Smith told police he and Knowles were shot at by unknown persons while he was driving. Prosecutors said Smith was never able to provide any details as to who was involved the in shooting.
Police said they found three spent bullet casings and a sock containing $29,900 inside Smith's vehicle.
