Man's death in Indianapolis homeless camp fire under investigation

INDIANAPOLIS — Homicide detectives are conducting the death investigation of a man found dead near a tent fire on the southeast side of Indianapolis.

Around 11:30 p.m. on Wednesday night, the Indianapolis Fire Department were dispatched to a wooded area at 2200 Iowa Street, a southeast side homeless camp, for reports of a tent fire with possible entrapment. When firefighters arrived, they located the blaze coming from a "makeshift shelter using tarps" that had no extensions. IFD was able to put the fire out in less than 15 minutes, according to IFD public information officer Rita Reith.

Firefighter's located a deceased 53-year-old man near the area of the fire.

The cause of the fire and death have yet to be determined at the time of this reporting. According to Reith, Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department homicide detectives will continue the death investigation.
