INDIANAPOLIS — A mother says her kids were getting off the school bus, when a stranger waiting in a car rolled down the window and asked the kids if they needed a ride.
This is not the only incident that has parents talking and thinking of ways to protect their children.
"I will go to prison over my kids in a heart beat. Don't don't mess with mine," said a Decatur Township mom, Ashley Johnson.
On Friday, Johnson was standing in her doorway, waiting for her kids to get off the bus, when she noticed a gold Toyota Corolla slowly drive by.
"It stopped to let everyone off the bus. All I seen was them running home," Johnson said.
"They rolled down the window halfway, they said, 'do you want a ride.' I told my brother, 'hurry up lets run home," said Johnson's daughter Makinzie Taylor.
Johnson called police after the incident. Now, she's making sure she's at the bus stop everyday , despite only living six houses away.
"They are getting on the bus with me or my grandpa. And they are getting off the bus with me or my grandpa," she said.
RTV6 does not know about at least two other attempted abductions posted about on Facebook here in Decatur Township. but parents are now talking and taking steps to keep their children safe.
Charlene Laudig lives just blocks away from Troy Avenue Roena, where a mother posted on Facebook saying a man in a white van tried to get her daughter inside his vehicle.
"Just knowing there are people out there that do that kind of thing — they act like they don't care — it makes me want to step my game up. To do whatever I can to protect my child," Laudig, a Decatur township mom said.
Laudig says she always walks her 8-year-old daughter to the bus stop, and watches for her to come home.
This is something Johnson is now warning parents in the community to do, as well.
Decatur Township schools say no one has directly contacted it's officers with details, but they are encouraging parents to be watchful for their surroundings, and their 'here comes the bus' app.
