LAWRENCE, Ind. -- A fallen Lawrence firefighter was laid to rest on Friday.
Jeffrey Holt was finishing his annual physical assessment training at the fire station on Sunday when he suddenly suffered a heart problem.
Holt died at the hospital. He was 60 years old.
"No ship should witness and have to save a shipmate as he dies. And no crew should have to go home without a member. And yet here we are. We are fortunate as firefighters, EMS providers, to have skills and abilities to save lives, including Jeff's, but it's not up to us if we can. That's God's decision. So there's no time living on how long this healing will take. It may take months or years, but I believe that we can remember the laughter and good times. We'll be alright."
Jeffrey Holt been with the Lawrence Fire Department since 1996.
He served as an engineer, lieutenant, division chief of training, and a deputy chief of operations.
This was the first firefighter line of duty death for Lawrence.
