INDIANAPOLIS - Students in the final classes at three Indianapolis high schools receive their diplomas Thursday evening.
Broad Ripple High School is closing, while Arlington and Northwest are converting to middle schools.
Citing falling enrollment, IPS board members made the decision last September, after a series of public hearings.
IPS high schools have about 5,000 students, compared to more than 50,000 in the 1960’s when the system had eleven high schools.
Four schools will be left: Shortridge, Attucks, Washington and Tech.
Founded in 1886, Broad Ripple is by far the oldest high school.
No decision has been made on what will become of that building.
Arlington and Northwest opened in the early 1960’s.
