SPEEDWAY, Ind. -- More change is on the horizon for Main Street in Speedway.

In the past week, the town awarded a contract to demolish an old gas station at 14th and Main streets and another contract to pave that space for parking.

The lot situated next to the now-vacant Ted's Beauty Shop building and the Speedway Clock Shop will be used as temporary parking during the construction of the Wilshaw project.

Wilshaw is a $37 million multi-use project announced in late 2015 that's planned for about 3.5 acres of land southeast of the roundabout in front of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

It includes 90 apartments,  a 126-room hotel, more than 10-thousand square feet of retail space and more than 238 parking spots, including 55 public spaces.

Tim Gropp,  Economic Development Director for the Town of Speedway, said they are looking to close on the sale of the property with the developer the week of October 23 with Wilshaw groundbreaking sometime in November.

The new parking lot at 14th and Main will provide 14 parking spaces to help make up for spots that will be lost during the Wilshaw  construction.  Demolition of the gas station is expected to begin in the next 30 days.
