INDIANAPOLIS — Happy birthday, Indiana.

Statehood came to Indiana on Dec. 11, 1816.

Hundreds turned out at the statehouse rotunda on Tuesday for a birthday celebration.

Many in attendance were fourth graders from around the state who are learning Indiana history.

There was bagpipe music, the Plainfield High School Chorus sang "Indiana," and Statehood Day essay winner Mylee Sinn of Rensselaer was recognized.

Indiana was the 19th state admitted to the union.

There are close to 7 million Hoosiers now.

In 1816, the new state's population was less than 70,000.
