MARTINSVILLE, Ind. -- Martinsville's police chief resigned suddenly Tuesday after less than a year on the job.

Mayor Shannon E. Kohl made the announcement on her Facebook page, saying Police Chief Rick Lang's resignation was effective immediately.

Lang was selected as Martinsville's new chief in December 2015 following Kohl's election. Prior to taking the role, he had 40 years of experience in law enforcement, including 20 years as an Indiana State Police trooper.

Kohl didn't cite specifics for Lang's departure, saying only there are "growing pains" in every new administration.

"All we can do at this point is move forward to continue making progress for the community and constituents we serve," Kohl said.

Deputy Police Chief Matt Long will serve as interim chief until a replacement for Lang is found.
