GRAND RAPIDS, MICH. — A consumer drug take-back program started by Meijer two months ago has helped dispose of more than four tons of unwanted medications.
According to a release from the supercenter chain, Meijer's program was introduced at each of its 241 locations across the Midwest.
Customers can use kiosks during pharmacy hours to discard any unused, unwanted or expired medications, including opioids, controlled substances and over-the-counter medications.
Items that are not accepted include needles, asthma inhalers, mercury thermometers and medications that contain iodine. Illicit drugs, including marijuana, and prescription medications obtained illegally also are prohibited.
The release said six million Americans misused controlled prescription drugs, according to the Drug Enforcement Administration's 2017 National Survey on Drug Use and Health.
Saturday is National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day across the country. People can bring unwanted prescription drugs to multiple locations around the city.
