MIAMI COUNTY, Ind. -- A 12-year-old girl was killed in a three vehicle crash Tuesday morning in Miami County.
The crash happened around 8 a.m. at the intersection of U.S. 24 and Broadway Street.
Indiana State Police say Scott Baker, 62, of Eaton, was eastbound on U.S. 24 in a 2006 semi pulling a box trailer.
A 2003 Ford Explorer driven by Kristina Buffington, 31, of Peru, was facing westbound in a turn lane, waiting to turn southbound onto Broadway Street.
The signal at east/west U.S. 24 turned red and the Explorer turned onto southbound Broadway, according to state police.
Troopers say the semi did not stop for the red light and entered the intersection, hitting the Explorer on the passenger side.
The Explorer then spun into a 2017 Chevrolet Cruz driven by Jayson Hall, 43, of Peru, that was facing northbound on Broadway Street in a turn lane, waiting to turn east onto U.S. 24.
Baker, the driver of the semi, was not hurt. He was hauling scrap for OJC Trucking based in Hartford City.
Buffington, the driver of the Explorer, was flown by medical helicopter to a Ft. Wayne hospital with life-threatening injuries.
Devin Buffington, 8, a passenger in the Explorer. was also flown to a Ft. Wayne hospital with facial and head injuries. He's said to be stable.
Amanda Buffington, 12, also a passenger in the Explorer, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Hall, the driver of the Cruz, was taken to a Peru hospital then flown by medical helicopter to a Ft. Wayne hospital with life-threatening injuries.
The crash is under investigation, but state police say it doesn't appear at this time that alcohol or narcotics contributed to the accident.
The state police crash reconstruction team will look at the evidence and send a report to the Miami County prosecutor's office for review.
