69-year-old woman trapped in car nearly two days after accident rescued by good Samaritans

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- A 69-year-old Bloomington woman trapped her in her car for almost two days after going off the road and getting wedged between trees was saved after good Samaritans heard her honking horn and called for help.

Police say the woman admitted to driving too fast when she went off North Kinser Pike and down into a ravine where her car got wedged between two trees. They believe the crash happened sometime Friday afternoon.

Terri Boas lives across the street from the accident site and said she heard a noise around 9 a.m. Sunday that got her attention.

“I thought it was a car alarm because it had a pattern,” said Boas. “Then it stopped having a pattern and became real persistent. That’s when I thought something wasn’t quite right.”

Boas says she called the police and then went down to find the source, that’s when she saw the woman trapped in her Chevy Malibu.

Bloomington Police Department Captain Steve Kellams says the driver’s door was wedged into the tree and she was unable to open it.

“The passenger’s side door, you probably could have opened that, but there was about a five-six foot drop-off that would have made it very difficult for someone who wasn’t in great physical condition to get out of the vehicle,” said Capt. Kellams.

The woman was taken to IU Health Bloomington where she was treated for dehydration but is expected to make a full recovery.

Police are crediting her for honking her horn and recommend that drivers also keep their cell phone within reach while they are on the road in case of an emergency situation like this.
