INDIANAPOLIS -- Festivities leading up to the 100th running of the Indianapolis 500 continued on Saturday with the 40th annual Mini Marathon.

The competition drew in more than 30,000 participants. The first wave took off on their 13.1 mile venture at 7:30 a.m. followed by five more waves of runners and walkers within the next hour.

"It's weird having thousands of people around you," Gabe Fendel, a student at Hamilton Southeastern High School, said.

"It really keeps you going and sometimes you can converse with people around you if they're willing," Janet Crawford, a participant from Fort Wayne said.

The course ran through downtown -- over to the motor speedway where they complete a lap ---and then finish at Military Park.
